A. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), if your child has a lisp beyond age 5, you should consider enlisting the help of a speech-language pathologist (SLP). These specialists are also called speech therapists.your child's s sounds this way and he's only 6, don't worry. This happens with many children, and most will outgrow it by age 7 with no intervention at all. If your child is 7, though, you should get some professional help, since a lisp is a hard habit to break as a child gets older. If you suspect you or your child has a lateral lisp, you can once again try practicing the exploding /t/ technique. This will help position the tongue correctly so that airflow is being directed out of the front of the mouth. You can also use a straw and hold it in front of the teeth. Many young children have some kind of lisp as they learn to talk. It is one of the most common speech impediments. About 23% of speech-language pathologist clients have lisps. However, you may want to look into professional help if your child is still lisping after the age of 4 1/2.

A. It is not possible to say for sure why a child starts stammering, but it is not caused by anything the parents have done. Developmental and inherited factors may play a part, along with small differences in how efficiently the speech areas of the brain are working.
