Q.

My son of 40 days has this eye infection almost since birth. We have been advised by the doctor to use Toba eye drops however it did not get much better. Then she asked us to use Toba Ointment but none of the pharmacy has that ointment. What can we use as an alternative?

A. Antibiotic eye drops or ointment are placed in a newborn's eyes after birth. This is to protect babies from getting bacterial eye infections that can occur during birth. Untreated, these infections can cause serious problems including blindness. The antibiotic erythromycin is used most often.
