A. Allergic rhinitis, which is an allergic reaction that affects the nose, can sometimes cause coughing, especially if it leads to post-nasal drip, where mucus from the nose drips down the back of the throat. However, coughing alone does not automatically mean asthma. Asthma typically involves symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest, along with coughing. If your son is only experiencing coughing without these additional symptoms, it might be a sign of allergic rhinitis or another condition. Home Remedies for Allergic Rhinitis and Coughing: Saline Nasal Spray or Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or a neti pot can help clear mucus from the nasal passages and reduce post-nasal drip, which might be causing the cough. Honey and Warm Water: Honey has soothing properties and can help ease throat irritation caused by coughing. Add a teaspoon of honey to warm water and let your child drink it before bed. Steam Inhalation: Steam can help loosen mucus in the nose and chest. You can have your child inhale steam from a bowl of hot water or take a warm shower to breathe in the steam. Maintain a Clean and Allergen-Free Environment: Dust, pollen, and other allergens can worsen allergic rhinitis and coughing. Keep your home dust-free, use air purifiers, and avoid exposure to known allergens. Warm Fluids: Encouraging your son to drink plenty of fluids like warm water, herbal teas (like chamomile), or broths can help keep the throat moist and reduce irritation. Elevate the Head While Sleeping: Prop up your child’s head with extra pillows during sleep to help reduce coughing caused by post-nasal drip. Herbal Remedies (with Care): Herbal teas like ginger, thyme, or peppermint can be soothing for coughs. Make sure to consult with a pediatrician before using any herbal remedies. Will He Outgrow It? Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma: Many children with allergic rhinitis may develop asthma later on, especially if there is a family history of asthma or allergies. However, allergic rhinitis itself may improve or resolve as they grow older. Asthma Development: If your son’s coughing persists, becomes more frequent, or is accompanied by wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness, it could be an early sign of asthma, and you should consult a pediatrician for further evaluation. Managing Allergic Rhinitis Long-Term: Medications: Over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines, decongestants, or nasal steroids might be recommended by your doctor if the symptoms are persistent. Allergy Testing: Identifying and avoiding specific allergens can help manage the condition better. It's important to consult with your pediatrician or an allergist to confirm the diagnosis and develop a treatment plan tailored to your son's needs.
