During COVID—or any situation where a child spends their formative years interacting with only a select few people—their world tends to shrink to just those individuals. They struggle to welcome new people into their lives or feel comfortable around them. To help with this, take your child to play with other children in the neighborhood regularly; gradually, they will make friends and overcome their hesitation. You can also ask their teacher at school to help them befriend a classmate and spend time together, which will help the child step out of their shell and feel more at ease. It will take time, but things will normalize as they begin to mingle and socialize with others.
