It makes them feel calm and helps them deal with stressful situations. For some babies, finger sucking helps to fall asleep and some soothe themselves by sucking finger. Give them a soft toy, a rubber ball, finger puppets etc as these items will keep their hands occupied and also distract them from anxiety. Most infants usually grow out of the habit without any intervention being needed. Find out when your baby starts sucking on his finger. This should help you identify the triggers for finger sucking. Distract your child using words or actions when you are in the room.
