Its our bodys natural protective mechanism that melanin pigment which is responsible for imparting brown/tan/ Dark complexion to an individual is produced to absorb the harmful UV light which can cause Skin Cancers and other harmful effects. Its mostly excreted in dark/ Tan/brown skinned individuals as compared to fair skinned individuals, it's similar to a person going out in hot sunny day and turning tan or dark. What is a misconception which most of the people have where they believe that when you give the child into phototherapy they become dark but it’s not like that they probably don’t know that the skin colour generally changes for initial 6 to 8 months and then you can be more certain about the colour as it is totally going to be dependent upon the genetics of the child from either side of the parent and family
