Check the Temperature: Use a digital thermometer to measure your baby’s temperature. A fever is typically defined as a temperature above 100.4°F (38°C).
Keep Them Hydrated: Ensure your baby is drinking plenty of fluids (breast milk, formula, water, or oral rehydration solutions) to stay hydrated, as fever can lead to dehydration.
Dress Lightly: Dress your baby in lightweight clothing to help their body cool down. Avoid bundling them up too much, as this can trap heat.
Use Fever-Reducing Medications: For babies over 3 months old, you can give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil), but always follow the dosage recommendations based on your baby’s weight and age. Never give aspirin to a child due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Consult your pediatrician for the correct dosage.
Cool Compresses: You can apply a cool, damp washcloth to your baby’s forehead or back to help lower their temperature.
Monitor for Other Symptoms: If your baby has additional symptoms like persistent crying, difficulty breathing, vomiting, rash, or if the fever lasts more than 2-3 days, contact your pediatrician right away.
If your baby is younger than 3 months and has a fever, seek immediate medical attention, as it could indicate an infection that requires urgent care.
Always consult with your pediatrician if you're unsure about medication, dosages, or any other concerns regarding your baby’s fever.
