A. It is generally not recommended to add salt or sugar to the food of a 6-month-old baby. The World Health Organization (WHO) and health experts advise against introducing added salt or sugar in the first year of a baby's life. Here's why: 1. **Kidney Development:** A baby's kidneys are not fully developed to process excess salt. Introducing salt too early can strain their kidneys. 2. **Taste Preferences:** Babies naturally have a preference for sweet tastes. Introducing sugar early may encourage a preference for sweet foods, which can impact their long-term eating habits. For a 6-month-old baby in India, it's recommended to start with single-ingredient, iron-rich foods like rice or oat cereal, pureed fruits (without added sugar), and vegetables. As you gradually introduce new foods, focus on their natural flavors and nutritional content. Always consult with your pediatrician before introducing new foods or making changes to your baby's diet. They can provide personalized guidance based on your baby's development and individual needs.
