1. Ensure Proper Use of Nasal Drops:
Make sure you're using the nasal saline drops correctly, by gently tilting your baby’s head back and placing the drops in each nostril. After applying the drops, you can gently suction out the mucus using a bulb syringe (available at pharmacies). Make sure not to insert it too deeply into the nostrils.
Use the saline drops regularly, as recommended by the doctor.
2. Steam Inhalation:
Try to create a steamy environment in the bathroom. Run a hot shower and let the bathroom fill with steam. Hold your baby in the bathroom for 10–15 minutes to help clear the nasal passages.
3. Elevate the Head:
Slightly elevate the baby's head while sleeping (with a baby-safe pillow or by slightly propping the mattress) to help the mucus drain out. This can help prevent nasal congestion during sleep.
4. Keep Baby Hydrated:
Ensure that your baby is drinking enough fluids (breast milk or formula) to help thin the mucus. Proper hydration can help clear the congestion.
5. Humidifier:
A cool-mist humidifier in the baby’s room can help keep the air moist and prevent the nasal passages from drying out, which can make the cold symptoms worse.
6. Gentle Massage:
Gently massage the baby’s chest and back with a soft hand to help relieve the congestion.
7. Avoid Irritants:
Ensure that your baby is not exposed to any smoke, dust, or strong fragrances that might worsen the cold.
When to Contact the Doctor:
If the cold persists beyond 2-3 weeks, worsens, or if your baby has difficulty breathing, a fever, or is very fussy, it is important to contact your pediatrician again. Sometimes prolonged cold symptoms can lead to secondary infections like ear infections or other respiratory issues.
Let your doctor know that the saline drops aren't working as expected, and they may suggest an alternative treatment or check for any other underlying causes.
