A. It's common for a baby's fontanelles (soft spots) to remain open beyond their first year. The timing for closure can vary: ### **1. **Timing:** - **Anterior Fontanelle:** Typically closes between 12 to 18 months but can remain open up to 24 months. - **Posterior Fontanelle:** Usually closes by 2 to 3 months. ### **2. **Monitor Development:** - **Growth and Development:** Ensure your baby is meeting developmental milestones, such as motor skills and cognitive abilities. ### **3. **Consult Your Pediatrician:** - **Professional Evaluation:** Discuss your concerns with your pediatrician. They can assess if the fontanelle's size and closure are within normal limits or if further investigation is needed. ### **4. **Look for Other Signs:** - **Physical Symptoms:** Pay attention to any unusual signs like a bulging fontanelle, which may indicate increased intracranial pressure or other issues. ### **5. **Regular Check-Ups:** - **Routine Visits:** Keep up with regular check-ups to monitor your baby's growth and development, including the fontanelle. Most often, an open fontanelle beyond the typical age is not a cause for concern and may simply be a normal variation in development. However, always seek medical advice to ensure your baby’s health and development are on track.
