A. It's not uncommon for babies to go through phases with their eating habits, especially after they start solids. Here are some strategies to encourage your baby to eat and to help address her sudden change in appetite: Tips to Encourage Eating in Babies 1. Variety and Presentation: Try Different Textures: Babies can be particular about textures. If she liked smooth purees, consider offering soft finger foods like cooked sweet potatoes, bananas, or steamed carrots. Fun Shapes: Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes with her food, making it visually appealing. 2. Incorporate Favorites: If she enjoys certain foods (like khichdi), try incorporating her favorites into new dishes. For example, add her favorite vegetables or a bit of cheese to khichdi. 3. Avoid Pressure: Offer food without pressure or stress. Allow her to explore food at her own pace, even if that means she plays with it instead of eating. 4. Routine and Environment: Establish a regular feeding schedule and a calm, distraction-free environment during meals. Eating together as a family can also encourage her to eat. 5. Involve Her: Let her be involved in the process, like helping to mash or stir soft foods. This can make her more interested in eating. 6. Small Portions: Offer small portions so she doesn’t feel overwhelmed. If she finishes, you can always offer more. 7. Experiment with Flavors: Introduce new flavors gradually. Sometimes adding a pinch of mild spices (like cumin or coriander) can enhance the taste of her food without overwhelming her. 8. Stay Consistent: Keep offering a variety of foods, even if she rejects them initially. It can take several exposures before she accepts new foods. Signs of Nutritional Needs Hydration: Ensure she is drinking enough fluids. Offer water or diluted fruit juices in between meals. Monitor Weight: Keep track of her weight and growth. If you have concerns about her weight or nutrition, consult your pediatrician. When to Consult a Pediatrician If her refusal to eat persists for more than a few weeks, or if you notice other concerning symptoms (like weight loss, lethargy, or gastrointestinal issues), it’s best to consult your pediatrician. They can provide personalized advice and check for any underlying issues. Conclusion Changes in eating habits are common, and with patience and creativity, she may gradually become more interested in food again. Keep offering a variety of healthy options, and try not to stress too much—many children go through picky phases that resolve with time.
