A. If your 4-week-old baby is making a wheezy or whistling sound while sleeping, it is often due to: 1. Newborn Nasal Congestion (Most Common) ✅ 🔹 Babies have small nasal passages that get blocked easily 🔹 Dry air, milk residue, or mucus buildup can cause a wheezing or snoring sound 🔹 More noticeable when lying flat ✔ What to Do? Use saline drops (2 drops in each nostril) before feeds Nasal aspirator to clear mucus if baby struggles to breathe Run a humidifier or keep a bowl of warm water in the room Ensure baby sleeps with head slightly elevated (not too high) 2. Laryngomalacia (Floppy Airway) – Common in Newborns 🔹 A harmless condition where the baby’s soft voice box tissue flops inward while breathing 🔹 Wheezing increases when lying on the back or after feeding 🔹 Improves as the baby grows (usually by 6-12 months) ✔ What to Do? Hold baby upright for 20-30 mins after feeding Tummy time to strengthen airway muscles 🚨 See a Doctor If: Baby struggles to breathe or lips turn blue Pauses in breathing (more than 10 seconds) Very loud wheezing that does not improve with time 3. Reflux or Milk Coming Up 🔹 Babies may sound wheezy due to mild acid reflux 🔹 Happens when milk comes back up from the stomach into the throat ✔ What to Do? Feed in an upright position and keep baby upright for 20-30 mins after feeding Give smaller, frequent feeds to avoid overfeeding 📌 If baby is happy, feeding well, and has no breathing distress, it is usually normal. But if the wheezing worsens or is continuous, consult a pediatrician.
