Q.

My 14 months old has been peeing after a long interval, of almost 12 hrs. Is this a matter of concern? Do we need to go to Doctor?

A. Dr said that it's due to extreme heat conditions. We asked to give more water to the baby

A. A 14-month-old who is urinating only once every 12 hours could potentially be a concern, as infants and toddlers typically urinate more frequently. Here are some things to consider: ### **Possible Concerns:** 1. **Dehydration:** Long intervals between urination might indicate that your child is not drinking enough fluids. Ensure they are getting adequate hydration throughout the day. 2. **Urinary Tract Infection (UTI):** UTIs can sometimes cause changes in urination patterns. Look for additional symptoms such as fever, fussiness, or discomfort while urinating. 3. **Kidney Function:** Rarely, infrequent urination can be a sign of underlying kidney issues. ### **When to Consult a Doctor:** - **Observation:** If your child has been consistently urinating infrequently and you notice other symptoms such as changes in appetite, behavior, or signs of discomfort, it's a good idea to consult a pediatrician. - **Hydration Check:** Ensure your child is drinking enough fluids and not showing signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth, reduced tears, or dark-colored urine. - **Consult a Pediatrician:** It’s always wise to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate evaluation. They can perform necessary tests and determine if there is an underlying issue. ### **What You Can Do:** - **Monitor Fluid Intake:** Ensure your child is drinking enough fluids throughout the day. - **Track Urination Patterns:** Keep a record of urination patterns and any associated symptoms to share with the doctor. It's better to err on the side of caution and get a professional opinion to rule out any potential issues.
