Iron-rich foods: Offer soft, iron-rich options like mashed lentils (dal), boiled and mashed spinach, egg yolks, chickpeas, tofu, and fortified cereals. Pair these with small amounts of fruits like mashed papaya or guava (if tolerated) to enhance absorption. Avoid tea and dairy near meals, as they reduce iron absorption. Try iron drops with stool-softening foods: If supplements are necessary, ask your doctor about low-dose iron drops and give foods like prunes, papaya, oats, or warm water to reduce constipation. Cook in an iron kadai (iron pan)—this naturally increases iron in food.
If constipation continues, your pediatrician may recommend a stool softener alongside iron therapy.
