A. Nighttime abdominal pain in a 20-month-old can be caused by various factors, including: 1. Gas or Indigestion: If your daughter has eaten something that caused gas or indigestion, it could lead to discomfort, especially during the night. Try gently massaging her tummy in a clockwise direction to relieve gas. 2. Constipation: If she has not passed stool recently or has difficulty during bowel movements, it could result in pain. Make sure she has enough fiber in her diet and is drinking plenty of water. 3. Reflux: If your daughter is experiencing acid reflux, it could cause nighttime discomfort. Keeping her head slightly elevated during sleep might help. 4. Colic or Trapped Gas: Colic can still affect toddlers, and trapped gas can cause severe discomfort. You could try gripe water or any pediatric-approved remedies for gas relief. 5. Food Sensitivities or Allergies: Certain foods may cause discomfort. If you notice a pattern of pain after specific meals, it may help to consult a pediatrician about possible food sensitivities. 6. Infections: If there are accompanying symptoms like fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, it might be due to a stomach infection or other illness. A pediatric consultation is advisable in this case. You could try giving her some relief measures, such as a warm compress on the abdomen, and see if that helps. If the pain persists or worsens, it’s best to consult a pediatrician to identify the underlying cause.
