A. Dosage: For babies 3 to 18 months old, give 5 ml (1 teaspoon) orally. Frequency: Repeat the dose every 4 hours as needed, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Ingredients: Gripe water usually contains herbs like ginger, fennel, and lemon balm, as well as sodium bicarbonate. Safety: Gripe water is a supplement, not a medication, and isn't regulated by the FDA. Some ingredients in gripe water can be harmful to babies, including alcohol, wheat, dairy, and sucrose. Colic: Colic symptoms usually improve by the time babies are 3 to 4 months old. While gripe water is probably safe, it's not an effective alternative for soothing colicky babies. In fact, some say that gripe water can increase the risk of introducing bacteria and allergens into a baby's intestines, which can irritate them or cause infections.
