A. Weaning from night feeds can be challenging, especially when your son is used to breastfeeding for comfort. Here are some tips to help with a smoother transition:
1. Gradual Reduction Try reducing the duration of night feeds over a few days. If he usually feeds for 10 minutes, reduce it to 8, then 6, and so on. Offer water instead of milk if he wakes up and asks for feeding. 2. Increase Daytime Feeds & Meals Ensure he eats well during the day so he doesn’t wake up hungry. Include filling foods like oats, rice, banana, or sweet potato in his dinner. 3. Comfort Without Feeding Rock, pat, or hold him close instead of feeding when he wakes up. Offer a favorite soft toy or blanket for comfort. 4. Dad or Another Caregiver’s Help Let your partner or another family member comfort him when he wakes up. If he knows you won’t breastfeed, he may settle down faster. 5. Change Sleep Associations If he is used to falling asleep while nursing, start a new bedtime routine like reading a book or cuddling instead. Try shifting his last feed earlier, before his actual bedtime routine. 6. Stay Consistent Expect resistance and crying, but consistency is key. If you give in once, he may cry even more next time. Offer reassurance with cuddles and soothing words, but try not to give in to feeding if you’ve decided to stop.
It may take a few nights to a couple of weeks, but with patience, he will adjust. Let me know if you need more specific advice based on his age and habits!
