A. Hello parent, Thanks for posting your query here. Abdominal tightness and back pain at 35 weeks of pregnancy could be signs of labor, but they may also be caused by other factors such as Braxton Hicks contractions or normal pregnancy discomforts. Here's how to distinguish between these possibilities: 1. Signs of True Labor: Regular Contractions: If the abdominal tightness (contractions) becomes regular, intense, and occurs at consistent intervals (about every 5 to 10 minutes), it could be a sign of early labor. Lower Back Pain: Intense lower back pain that comes in waves and doesn't go away could indicate labor, especially if combined with contractions. Cervical Changes: True labor is marked by cervical dilation and effacement, which can only be confirmed by your healthcare provider. Water Breaking: The rupture of the amniotic sac (water breaking) is a clear sign of labor. Bloody Show: A discharge of blood-tinged mucus could indicate that labor is near. 2. Braxton Hicks Contractions: These are often called "practice contractions" and can cause abdominal tightness, but they are usually irregular, not as painful, and go away with rest, hydration, or a change in position. 3. Other Possible Causes: Round Ligament Pain: This can cause abdominal discomfort but is usually sharp and brief. Pressure from the Baby: As the baby grows, pressure on the abdomen and lower back increases, causing discomfort but not necessarily signaling labor. What You Should Do: Rest and Hydrate: Braxton Hicks contractions and normal pregnancy aches often subside with rest and drinking water. Track the Contractions: If the contractions become regular and progressively stronger, it could be early labor. Call Your Doctor: If you're experiencing intense back pain, regular contractions, or any other concerning symptoms (like bleeding or leaking fluid), contact your healthcare provider to rule out preterm labor. At 35 weeks, it’s a bit early for labor, but preterm labor can happen. Always consult your healthcare provider if you're unsure.
