1. Weight gain: Regular check-ups with the pediatrician will ensure your babies are gaining weight appropriately. Typically, babies gain about 150-200 grams per week in the first few months.
2. Number of wet and dirty diapers: If your twins are producing 6-8 wet diapers and at least 2-3 dirty diapers a day, that is a good sign they are getting enough milk.
3. Contentment after feeds: If they seem satisfied and relaxed after feeding, it indicates they are being adequately nourished. However, it's normal for them to want to feed more frequently during growth spurts.
4. Breast feel and milk supply: You might notice your breasts feel softer and emptier after a feed. Some women may experience a "let-down" feeling when milk is flowing.
Managing breastfeeding for twins:
1. Feed from both breasts: It's important to offer both breasts during each feed to ensure balanced milk supply for both babies. Start with one breast, and once it seems empty, switch to the other breast. Alternate which breast you start with for each feed.
2. Feed both babies simultaneously (double nursing): Many mothers of twins choose to nurse both babies at the same time. This can be done with a twin nursing pillow, which helps you position them comfortably.
3. Frequent feeds: Since twins may have smaller stomachs, they might need to feed more frequently. Try to feed them every 2-3 hours, or whenever they show hunger cues.
4. Pumping (if needed): If you're concerned about milk supply or want to manage feedings, you can pump after nursing to store extra milk. This can also help maintain or increase milk production.
Regularly monitoring your babies’ growth and overall health, along with consulting your pediatrician and lactation consultant, will help you confirm they’re getting enough breast milk.
