POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy1 Year agoA. For a 1.5-year-old baby, vaccination pain or discomfort typically lasts for a short duration. Here's a general timeline and what you can expect:
### **1. Immediate Reaction:**
- **First Few Hours:** Some swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection site can occur immediately after the vaccination. This is normal and should start to improve within a few hours.
### **2. First 24 Hours:**
- **Discomfort:** The baby may experience mild discomfort or irritation at the injection site. This discomfort can be more noticeable when the baby moves their arm or leg where the shot was given.
### **3. 1-2 Days:**
- **Pain and Swelling:** Pain and swelling at the injection site might persist for up to 24 to 48 hours. In most cases, this should gradually decrease over time.
### **4. Beyond 2 Days:**
- **Continued Symptoms:** If the pain, swelling, or redness persists beyond 48 hours, or if you notice any unusual symptoms such as a high fever, severe swelling, or a rash, it’s a good idea to consult with your pediatrician.
### **Managing Discomfort:**
- **Cold Compress:** Applying a cold compress to the injection site can help reduce swelling and pain.
- **Pain Relief:** If needed, you can give your baby an age-appropriate dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as per your pediatrician’s guidance.
### **When to Seek Medical Advice:**
- **Persistent Pain:** If the pain or swelling is severe or lasts more than a couple of days.
- **Signs of Infection:** If you notice increasing redness, warmth, or pus at the injection site.
- **Unusual Symptoms:** If your baby develops a high fever, unusual crying, or any other concerning symptoms.
Overall, vaccination-related discomfort is usually temporary and resolves on its own. Always follow the guidance provided by your healthcare provider regarding managing post-vaccination symptoms.
