Q.

Hi Madam, My wife breastfeeds my new born baby girl who is 13 days old. My wife is facing issue with while breastfeeding like: 1) sometimes milk is not coming out from right breast and sometimes comes. so after latching, baby tries to suck but leaves immediately. there is no problem with the left breast. Milk production is good with this one always. 2) while baby sucks, my wife feels pain in both breasts. Please help me with what to do with these problems?

A. It's excellent that you're being so supportive of your wife’s breastfeeding journey. These are important questions. 1. Unilateral milk supply: It's not uncommon for one breast to produce more milk than the other. Your wife can try massaging the breast, warm compresses, or pumping to stimulate more milk production. Sometimes, babies develop a preference for one side because of the position they're fed in. Trying various feeding positions may help the baby to latch on the 'less preferred' side. 2. Pain while nursing: This is frequently due to issues with latching or positioning. The baby's mouth should cover a large part of the areola, and her lips should be flanged outward like a fish. If the baby latches just on the nipple, it can cause significant discomfort. Lactation consultants can be a huge help by observing a feeding and giving specific feedback to help ensure a proper latch. Sometimes, pain can be caused by an infection such as mastitis or due to blocked milk ducts, particularly if there are hot, tender areas or red lines on the breast, or she feels generally unwell. If she's showing these signs, she should contact her doctor. Nipple creams can also help if the skin is getting cracked or sore. Infrequently, conditions such as thrush can cause pain and need specific treatments, so if the pain continues, definitely get medical advice. Please remember it's important to seek help from healthcare professionals such as doctors, lactation consultants, or health visitors when facing such issues. They can provide personalized advice based on their observations and expertise. Internet advice can miscommunicate or misinterpret issues, especially when it comes to health topics, so professional medical advice is always the best route.
