Q.

Hi, I have 2 month old baby, my baby has been choking on milk since birth, but recently she choked on milk severely, her body got stiff and was not able to breathe for sometime with no sign of moving. from then she coughs after feeding and vomits milk with choking, she often coughs in the middle of sleep like choking, she has noisy breathing while sleeping. she continued to choke on milk after every feeding. I am more concerned if milk has gone through her lungs. please suggest me if I need to see a doctor regarding this.

A. Hi Tanya, we have visited doctor, they said if baby is choking while feeding I need to adjust the position correctly to not choke, if baby is coughing and vomiting after feeding that's due to acid reflux for which we need to burp the baby and keep the baby in upright position in 45° angle after feeding atleast for 30 mins. if continued for a week then they will suggest a chest x-ray based on severity.

A. It sounds like your two-month-old baby may be experiencing a condition known as aspiration (when milk goes into the lungs) or reflux (where stomach contents come back up into the throat). Given the severity of the symptoms, including choking, stiffness, difficulty breathing, coughing after feeding, and noisy breathing while sleeping, it is very important to consult a doctor or pediatrician immediately. Possible Causes: 1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Some babies have reflux, where milk comes back up from the stomach into the esophagus, leading to choking and coughing. 2. Aspiration: There is a possibility that milk is entering the lungs when feeding, which can cause choking, coughing, and potentially pneumonia. 3. Laryngomalacia: A condition where the tissues of the larynx are softer than normal, causing noisy breathing, especially during feeding and sleeping. Immediate Steps to Take: Positioning During Feeding: Keep the baby in an upright position during and after feeding for at least 30 minutes to help reduce the risk of choking and reflux. Smaller, Frequent Feedings: Feeding smaller amounts more frequently may help reduce the chances of choking. Burp the Baby Frequently: After every few minutes of feeding, burping the baby can help release gas and prevent choking. When to See a Doctor: Since your baby has experienced severe choking, stiffness, and breathing difficulties, it is critical to seek medical attention immediately. These are signs that the baby may need further evaluation for conditions like aspiration, GERD, or other breathing-related issues. The doctor may recommend tests like: Chest X-ray to check if milk has entered the lungs. Swallow study to evaluate if the baby is swallowing correctly. Evaluation by a pediatric pulmonologist or gastroenterologist if needed. Given the seriousness of your baby's symptoms, I recommend seeing a doctor as soon as possible to ensure appropriate treatment and care.
