A. The Academy of Pediatrics) recommends introducing whole cow's milk to a baby's diet around the age of 1. Before this age, breast milk or formula is the primary source of nutrition for infants. Here are some key points to consider: 1. **Breast Milk or Formula Up to Age 1:** Breast milk or iron-fortified formula is the main source of nutrition for infants in their first year of life. These provide essential nutrients for growth and development. 2. **Introduction of Cow's Milk at Age 1:** Around the age of 1, you can start introducing whole cow's milk to your baby's diet. Whole milk is recommended for children under 2 years of age as they need the extra fat for brain development. 3. **Transition to Whole Milk:** Gradually transition to whole milk by mixing it with breast milk or formula in increasing proportions. By the age of 1, most babies can handle the digestibility of cow's milk. 4. **Avoid Low-Fat or Skim Milk Before Age 2:** It's important to use whole milk and not low-fat or skim milk for children under the age of 2, as they need the fat content for proper growth and development. 5. **Consult with Pediatrician:** Before introducing cow's milk, it's advisable to consult with your pediatrician. They can provide personalized guidance based on your baby's individual needs and development. 6. **Monitor for Allergies or Sensitivities:** When introducing cow's milk, monitor your baby for any signs of allergies or sensitivities. Common symptoms may include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, or fussiness. Remember that every child is different, and individual needs can vary. The guidance provided by your pediatrician is essential for ensuring that the introduction of cow's milk aligns with your baby's overall health and development.
