Q.

hello doctor...my son has fever of 102 for the past two days..went to doctor and prescribed some medicines like paracetamol and meftal b and some cold syrups...we have given all medicines and my son refuses to eat anything..fever is high at night..our pediatrics told it is common..it will get rid within 5 days as it is a virus fever...feeling very low..kindly advice

A. yes this is viral fever it is very common that during the disease process the child will have loss of appetite as well as after the disease the child will have decreased appetite for food and this will last for at least one week. you have to provide plenty of water to drink and you can give food rich in fluids as well as juice extracted from fruits which will help in improving the appetite. if if the child is having nutritional deficiency the doctor will add multivitamin supplements to increase the appetite. your history tells us that the child is suffering from viral fever and in viral fever you have to give only symptomatic treatment that is for fever have to give paracetamol(max 4 times per day if needed) and plenty of water to drink and at least 60 to 70% of the regular diet and if the fever continues beyondd 3 days then meet the doctor please do body sponge that is body wiping to decrease the body temperature with wet cotton cloth.
