A. Sunscreen is important for babies because their skin is more delicate and sensitive than that of older children and adults. Here are some key reasons why sunscreen is important for babies: 1. **Prevents Sunburn**: Babies' skin can burn more easily due to its sensitivity. Sunscreen helps protect their skin from harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of painful sunburns. 2. **Reduces Risk of Skin Damage**: Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause skin damage, including premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen helps prevent these long-term effects by blocking harmful UV radiation. 3. **Protects Against UV Rays**: Both UVA and UVB rays from the sun can harm the skin. Sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, ensuring comprehensive defense against both types of UV rays. 4. **Prevents Dehydration**: Sunburn can lead to dehydration in babies. Using sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and, in turn, reduces the risk of dehydration. For babies under 6 months old, it is generally recommended to keep them out of direct sunlight and use protective clothing, hats, and shade. For babies older than 6 months, you can apply a baby-specific sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to exposed skin. Always test a small amount of sunscreen on your baby's skin first to check for any allergic reactions.
