Q.

#asktheexperts My kid is 2 years and 2 months old. We are not able to make her to sit in a place and teach anything. If we try, she running away from the place. She learning things from kids video, she trying to sing along with the lyrics, also repeating the words. Our main concern is how to make her calm and teach things from our side.

A. It’s quite common for toddlers around this age to have a lot of energy and short attention spans, so sitting still for structured learning can be challenging. Here are some strategies that might help: 1. Keep Learning Fun and Play-Based: Toddlers learn best through play. Use toys, colors, songs, and games to introduce concepts rather than formal teaching. For example, you could use building blocks to teach colors, or sing songs to introduce numbers. 2. Use Short Sessions: Keep learning sessions very short – about 5-10 minutes at a time. This will match her attention span and make it easier to keep her engaged without getting frustrated. 3. Incorporate Movement: Since she loves to move, add movement to learning activities. You could try jumping while counting, dancing to a song about colors, or using a scavenger hunt to find objects of different shapes around the room. 4. Follow Her Interests: Try to teach concepts around things she’s interested in. If she likes animals, for example, you can use animal toys to introduce counting, colors, and sounds. 5. Set a Routine: Incorporate learning into daily routines so it becomes a natural part of her day. For example, counting steps while climbing, naming colors during play, or talking about shapes while eating. 6. Use Positive Reinforcement: Praise and encourage her efforts. Even if she only sits for a few minutes, celebrate her attention to reinforce the behavior. With patience and a flexible approach, she'll gradually learn to engage in short, structured activities, and over time, her focus will improve.
