A. When investigating recurrent fever, the most likely etiology to consider is infection. Especially in children under the age of six years, the most common cause of multiple febrile episodes is the occurrence of repeated upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, otitis media). The fever goes away as the illness runs its course or, for a bacterial infection, has been treated with antibiotics. Other times, fevers can come and go over weeks at a time.
