POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy11 months agoA. It’s common for babies to experience constipation when new foods, like ragi, are introduced into their diet. Ragi (finger millet) is nutritious, but it can sometimes cause constipation, especially if not balanced with enough fiber and fluids.
What You Can Do:
1. Increase Fluid Intake:
Offer more water in small sips throughout the day to help soften the stool.
If breastfeeding, continue to breastfeed frequently, as it helps with hydration.
You can also give a small amount of diluted fruit juice (like prune or apple juice) to help ease constipation.
2. Introduce Fiber-Rich Foods:
Offer pureed fruits like prunes, pears, peaches, and apples. These are natural stool softeners.
Include vegetables like pumpkin or sweet potatoes in her diet.
3. Massage and Bicycle Legs:
Gently massage your baby’s tummy in a circular motion to help stimulate bowel movements.
Move her legs in a bicycling motion to relieve gas and encourage bowel movement.
4. Reduce or Adjust Ragi:
Consider reducing the quantity of ragi or stopping it for a few days to see if her condition improves. When you reintroduce it, try to balance it with fiber-rich foods and adequate fluids.
5. Warm Bath:
A warm bath can help relax her muscles and may provide some relief from the discomfort.
When to See a Doctor:
If your baby continues to have difficulty passing stool, becomes extremely uncomfortable, or if the stool is hard and pellet-like, consult a pediatrician. They may recommend a safe stool softener for babies if needed.
