A. It is not uncommon for a 9-month-old to still be without teeth. Every baby develops at their own pace, and teething can vary greatly from one child to another. Some babies get their first tooth as early as 4 months, while others may not get their first tooth until after their first birthday. If your 9-month-old is showing signs of teething, such as drooling, chewing on objects, or fussiness, it’s likely that the teeth are on their way. Here’s what you can do in the meantime to help ease any discomfort: 1. Teething Toys and Rings: Offer teething rings or soft toys that can be safely chewed. You can cool them in the fridge (not the freezer) to help soothe sore gums. 2. Massage the Gums: Gently rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger to provide some relief. This can help with discomfort and may even promote the eruption of teeth. 3. Cold Washcloth: A clean washcloth that has been chilled in the fridge can also provide soothing relief when chewed. 4. Pain Relievers: If your baby seems very uncomfortable, talk to your pediatrician about using age-appropriate pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage discomfort. 5. Distraction and Comfort: Offer comfort in the form of cuddles, soothing music, or a favorite toy. Distraction can help take your baby’s mind off the discomfort. When to See a Doctor: If your baby is still not showing any signs of teeth by 12 to 18 months or if you have concerns about the delay, it’s worth discussing with your pediatrician. However, in most cases, teething is just a matter of time and varies from child to child.
