POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy4 months agoA. It’s completely understandable to be concerned about your baby’s movements during sleep. Twitching of hands and legs in a 15-month-old baby during sleep is usually normal and common. These are called sleep myoclonus—brief, involuntary muscle jerks that often occur during the transition between sleep stages.
Since you’ve already consulted three pediatricians and they all confirmed it’s normal, it’s reassuring. Here’s why this may be happening:
Immature nervous system: At this age, the brain and nervous system are still developing, which can cause such involuntary movements. REM sleep phase: Babies spend more time in active or REM sleep, during which movements, twitches, and even vocal sounds are common. Growth and development: Muscle twitching can be a part of normal muscle tone development and nervous system activity.
When to be concerned: If you ever notice other signs like stiffening, unresponsiveness, bluish lips, or twitching while awake, or if episodes last a long time or increase suddenly, then it’s worth a follow-up with a pediatric neurologist.
But in your case, since it's mild, happens only during sleep, and doctors have ruled out any issues, there's no cause for worry. Just keep monitoring and ensure your baby gets good nutrition, hydration, and enough rest.
