POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy5 months agoA. A large navel in a 2-month-old baby is often due to an umbilical hernia, which is common and usually harmless. Here’s what you need to know:
Possible Reasons for a Big Navel:
Umbilical Hernia:
It happens when the abdominal muscles haven't fully closed around the belly button. The belly button may bulge more when the baby cries, coughs, or strains. Most umbilical hernias close on their own by 1-3 years of age without treatment.
Normal Variation:
Some babies naturally have a larger or more protruding navel, which may flatten as they grow. When to Worry? If the swelling is hard, painful, or changes color (red, purple, or blue). If your baby seems in pain or has vomiting. If the hernia is still there after 3-5 years of age. What You Can Do: No need to press or bandage the navel; it doesn’t help. Keep the area clean and dry. Regular check-ups with your pediatrician will help monitor it.
Most umbilical hernias don’t require surgery, but if it doesn’t close by 3-5 years or causes discomfort, the doctor may recommend treatment.
Let me know if the swelling is soft or hard, and if your baby is experiencing any other symptoms!
