A. The right latch is when your baby takes a large portion of the areola (not just the nipple) into their mouth, with lips flanged out like a fish. You should see more of the upper areola than the lower, and baby’s chin should touch your breast. You should not feel pain—just a gentle tug. As for how long, let your baby nurse on one breast until it feels soft or until the baby lets go on their own—usually around 15 to 20 minutes. Then offer the other breast if baby is still hungry. Every baby is different, so focus more on effective sucking and swallowing rather than exact time.
