A. Neonatal jaundice is generally harmless and is often characterized by a yellowing of the baby's skin and eyes. It occurs because a newborn's liver is not yet fully developed and may have difficulty processing bilirubin. Most cases of neonatal jaundice resolve on their own as the baby's liver matures and as the baby continues to feed and pass stools.
In cases where the bilirubin levels become too high, treatment may be required, often in the form of phototherapy (exposing the baby to special blue lights) or, in more severe cases, exchange transfusion, where a small amount of the baby's blood is replaced with donor blood. Monitoring bilirubin levels is a routine part of newborn care to ensure that jaundice does not reach dangerous levels. If you have concerns about your newborn's bilirubin levels, consult with a healthcare provider.
