Q.

#asktheexpert my daughter is having dried chapped lips from Feb 2023. The doctor said it might be coz dryness/ less hydration. What might be the cause? I have been applying cream which will subside for a while and also apply vasline ( which I am afraid that her lips might turn dark in future)

A. Dry or chapped lips in children can be uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help alleviate this issue: 1. **Hydration:** Ensure your child is well-hydrated. Encourage them to drink water throughout the day. 2. **Lip Balm:** Use a child-friendly, unscented, and hypoallergenic lip balm or petroleum jelly. Apply it to your child's lips as needed, especially before bedtime and when going outdoors in dry or cold weather. 3. **Humidifier:** Use a humidifier in your child's room, especially during the dry winter months. Adding moisture to the air can help prevent dry lips. 4. **Avoid Irritants:** Ensure your child's lip products, toothpaste, or mouthwash do not contain any ingredients that could be causing irritation. 5. **Protection from Sun:** If you're outdoors, use a child-safe lip balm with SPF to protect their lips from the sun. 6. **Saliva Avoidance:** Discourage your child from licking their lips frequently, as saliva can dry out the lips. 7. **Balanced Diet:** A healthy diet with adequate vitamins and minerals can help maintain skin and lip health. 8. **Consult a Pediatrician:** If the dryness persists or if your child's lips become cracked, painful, or infected, consult with a pediatrician for further evaluation and recommendations. Keep in mind that very young children may inadvertently rub or scratch their lips due to discomfort. It's essential to monitor their lips and address dryness promptly to prevent any worsening of the condition.
