A. It’s great to hear that your 22-month-old is active and healthy, which is a positive sign of overall well-being. Given that he was born with a low birth weight (2 kg), his current weight of 9.2 kg is understandable but could benefit from gradual, healthy weight gain. Here are some suggestions to help increase his weight: ### 1. **Nutrient-Dense Foods**: Focus on offering high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods that promote healthy weight gain: - **Healthy Fats**: Include foods rich in healthy fats like avocado, nut butters (if not allergic), ghee, and full-fat yogurt. - **Whole Grains**: Offer whole grains like oats, brown rice, and whole wheat for energy. - **Protein**: Include protein sources like eggs, lentils, chicken, and fish (if non-vegetarian). Paneer, tofu, and legumes are good vegetarian options. - **Dairy**: Full-fat milk, cheese, and yogurt are great sources of both calcium and calories. ### 2. **Small, Frequent Meals**: Since toddlers have small stomachs, aim to give small, frequent meals and snacks throughout the day. Avoid overloading them with large portions, as it may overwhelm them. ### 3. **Add Healthy Calories**: You can sneak extra calories into their meals without increasing portion sizes: - Add a spoonful of ghee or butter to dal, rice, or veggies. - Blend fruits with full-fat yogurt or milk to make smoothies. - Add powdered nuts (like almonds or walnuts) to porridge or smoothies. ### 4. **Encourage Finger Foods**: Some toddlers enjoy eating independently. Offer finger foods like small pieces of cheese, soft fruits, boiled eggs, or peanut butter toast to encourage them to eat more. ### 5. **Offer a Variety of Foods**: Try to introduce a variety of foods with different textures and tastes to keep them interested. Some toddlers can be picky, so rotate different types of vegetables, proteins, and grains to maintain interest. ### 6. **Fortified Cereals**: Offer cereals that are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, like iron and calcium, which are important for growth and development. ### 7. **Avoid Empty Calories**: Limit junk food, sugary snacks, and drinks, as these don’t provide the necessary nutrients for growth. Instead, opt for homemade snacks like vegetable parathas, fruit salads, or homemade energy bars with oats and nuts. ### 8. **Monitor Hydration**: Ensure your child is staying hydrated but avoid filling them up with liquids right before or during meals, as this can reduce their appetite for food. ### 9. **Supplements**: If you’re concerned about nutritional deficiencies or slow weight gain, consult with your pediatrician. They may recommend a multivitamin or iron supplement to support your child's growth. ### 10. **Create a Positive Mealtime Environment**: Keep mealtimes relaxed and positive. Avoid pressuring your child to eat more than they’re comfortable with, as it could lead to negative associations with food. Since your child is active and meeting developmental milestones, the focus should be on gradually improving their diet with nutrient-rich foods rather than rapid weight gain. Regular check-ups with the pediatrician will help monitor your child’s growth and ensure that everything is on track.
