A. At 2 years and 2 months, most children typically start combining two words (like "mama come" or "want toy") and may use around 50+ words. However, some kids develop speech a bit later, and it's not always a cause for concern—especially if they understand what you say, follow simple instructions, and communicate using gestures or expressions. Here are a few tips to help encourage speech: Talk a lot with your child – Describe what you’re doing, seeing, or feeling. Keep sentences simple and clear. Read books every day – Picture books with simple words and repetition are great. Limit screen time – Too much mobile or TV use can delay speech development. Sing nursery rhymes – Rhymes with actions like “Wheels on the Bus” are very helpful. Respond and expand – If your child says “ball,” you can say “Yes, red ball!” to show how to build sentences. Play together – Pretend play with toys, animals, and people encourages conversation. When to consult a doctor: You should consider seeing a pediatrician or speech therapist if: Your child uses fewer than 50 words Does not combine two words Struggles to understand instructions Rarely points or gestures to communicate Doesn’t show much interest in social interaction
