Q.

#asktheexpert My child is 10 months old. He has a cough with phlegm. I have tried a lot of medicines but his cough has not been cured yet and his sputum is not coming out.

A. For a 10-month-old baby with a cough and phlegm, try gentle home remedies to relieve discomfort. Give warm water sips or lukewarm breast milk to keep the throat moist. Offer homemade ajwain (carom seed) water or lukewarm turmeric milk (if already introduced). A gentle chest rub using warm mustard oil with garlic can help loosen mucus. Running a humidifier in the room or giving a steam bath (by sitting with the baby in a steamy bathroom) can ease congestion. Light back-patting can help loosen phlegm. Avoid cold foods and keep the baby warm. If the cough persists, worsens, or is accompanied by wheezing, breathing difficulty, or fever, consult a doctor.
