A. If your baby is showing signs of a cold, here are some common symptoms to watch for, along with guidance on what to do: Common Symptoms of a Cold in Babies 1. Runny or Stuffy Nose: Babies often develop a runny or blocked nose when they have a cold. This can cause them to breathe through their mouth or make feeding a bit more difficult. 2. Coughing: A mild cough is common with a cold as the body tries to clear mucus from the throat or lungs. 3. Sneezing: Sneezing is also a common response to a stuffy or irritated nose. 4. Watery Eyes: Some babies may have watery or slightly red eyes when they have a cold. 5. Mild Fever: A cold may cause a low-grade fever, though not always. 6. Irritability or Fussiness: A baby with a cold may be more fussy than usual, though if your baby is feeding and sleeping well, this may not be a concern. Steps to Confirm and Manage a Cold Monitor Temperature: Check his temperature to see if he has a fever. A fever above 100.4°F (38°C) would be more concerning. Observe Feeding and Behavior: If he’s feeding well and sleeping normally, that’s a good sign that it’s a mild cold. If he starts refusing food, seems lethargic, or has difficulty breathing, it may require medical attention. Nasal Congestion: You can use saline drops and a bulb syringe to clear his nose if it's stuffy, especially before feedings and sleep. Humidifier: Using a cool-mist humidifier in his room can help alleviate congestion and ease breathing. When to Seek Medical Attention You should contact your pediatrician if: His symptoms seem to worsen or last longer than 10 days. He develops a high fever (above 100.4°F or 38°C). He is having difficulty breathing or seems very tired or lethargic. He shows signs of ear pain (pulling at ears) or has difficulty feeding. Conclusion If he’s taking his feed properly, sleeping well, and doesn’t have a fever, it may just be a mild cold. Continue to monitor him closely, and if you’re concerned or if symptoms worsen, a visit to the pediatrician can help ensure there’s no other underlying issue.
