A. It’s common for newborns to have irregular bowel movements in the first few weeks of life, especially if they are breastfeeding. Since your baby is urinating regularly, this usually indicates that she is hydrated and getting enough milk. However, it’s important to monitor her closely. Here’s some guidance on what might be happening: 1. Normal for Newborns Breastfed babies: It is normal for breastfed babies to sometimes go several days without a bowel movement, especially after the first few days of life. Breast milk is very efficiently absorbed, and some babies may not need to poop as often. It's common for some breastfed babies to go up to 5-7 days without a bowel movement. Formula-fed babies: They tend to have more regular bowel movements, but even for them, a couple of days without pooping can still be normal. 2. Signs of Concern If your baby seems uncomfortable, is straining excessively, or her belly feels hard and distended, these could be signs of constipation. If she develops yellowing of the skin (jaundice), starts vomiting, or refuses to feed, these could be signs of a more serious issue. Dry, pellet-like stools or signs of severe discomfort during bowel movements would also warrant a visit to the pediatrician. 3. What You Can Do Tummy massage: Gently massage your baby’s belly in a clockwise motion to help stimulate bowel movements. Leg exercises: Bicycle movements with her legs can help relieve any gas and stimulate her bowels. Warm bath: Sometimes a warm bath can relax a baby’s muscles and help them have a bowel movement. 4. When to See a Doctor If your baby doesn’t poop for more than 5-7 days or if she seems uncomfortable, it’s a good idea to contact your pediatrician. If she shows signs of severe discomfort, vomiting, refusal to eat, or has fewer wet diapers than usual, seek medical attention right away. For now, if she is feeding well, gaining weight, urinating regularly, and doesn’t seem to be in distress, it’s likely not a major concern. Keep monitoring her closely, and if you notice any changes in her behavior or discomfort, reach out to your pediatrician for further advice.
