#AskTheExpert My 9 month old is weighing 8 kg. I'm breastfeeding and giving normal food also. My elder one is 6.7 year girl, she is weighing 17 Kg. Are they both underweight? Kindly advise on how to increase their weight?

A. 7.2 to 10.9 kg is the average weight range for 9 month old child. But it also depends on the baby's birth weight. Around 20 kg is the average weight range for 6 yr old child. But as long as the child is eating properly and is active and healthy you need not worry much about the weight. For the younger child, You can give banana, potatoes, sweet potatoes and continue feeding breastmilk or formula. You can add homemade ghee in babys regular meals. You can also give warm rice mixed with curd. All these could help weight gain. For the elder one, You can add full cream cows milk, eggs, meat if non vegetarian, potatoes and all diary products like butter, curd, ghee, cheese, paneer etc. Add dry fruits and nuts like almonds, pistachios, cashew, walnut, fig, dates in the child's regular diet. They will help to increase weight.
