A. It sounds like your two-year-old might be dealing with ingrown toenails, which occur when the sides or corners of the nail grow into the skin around the nail. This can cause discomfort, pain, swelling, and even infection if not addressed. Why it happens: Cutting nails incorrectly: If toenails are cut too short or with rounded edges, they are more likely to grow into the skin. Tight shoes: Shoes that are too tight can put pressure on the toes, causing nails to grow abnormally. Genetics: Some children are simply more prone to ingrown toenails due to the natural shape of their nails. Injury or trauma: Stubbed toes or other injuries can lead to improper nail growth. Remedies: 1. Soak the foot: Soaking her feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day can soften the nail and reduce discomfort. 2. Gently lift the nail: After soaking, try to gently lift the edge of the ingrown nail using a cotton ball or dental floss, placing it under the nail to encourage it to grow outward. 3. Proper trimming: Once the nail softens, trim the nail straight across rather than rounding the corners. Avoid cutting them too short. 4. Loose footwear: Make sure she’s wearing comfortable shoes with enough room for her toes to prevent pressure on the nails. 5. Avoid picking: Discourage her from picking at her toes, as this can make the condition worse. 6. Consult a doctor: If the condition persists, worsens, or signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus) appear, consult a pediatrician or podiatrist. They may prescribe topical treatments or provide a minor procedure to relieve the problem. Since your daughter is already experiencing discomfort, it might be best to consult a doctor to ensure proper treatment before it worsens.
