A. If your 1.5-year-old has ulcers on her tongue and is refusing food due to discomfort, here are some steps you can take to help manage her condition: ### **1. Identify and Avoid Irritants:** - **Check for Triggers:** Avoid spicy, acidic, or salty foods that may irritate the ulcers further. - **Soft Foods:** Offer soft, bland foods that are less likely to cause pain, such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, or applesauce. ### **2. Provide Pain Relief:** - **Pain Relief:** Consult your pediatrician about safe over-the-counter pain relief options for children. They may recommend a topical treatment or a suitable pain reliever. - **Cool Foods:** Offer cool or cold foods, such as chilled yogurt or smoothies, which can soothe the ulcers. ### **3. Maintain Oral Hygiene:** - **Gentle Brushing:** Ensure her teeth and gums are cleaned gently to avoid further irritation. - **Mouth Rinses:** If recommended by your pediatrician, use a mild, non-alcoholic mouth rinse to help keep the mouth clean. ### **4. Ensure Proper Hydration:** - **Fluids:** Encourage her to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and help heal the ulcers. ### **5. Monitor for Improvement:** - **Track Duration:** Keep an eye on the duration of the ulcers. They should improve within a week or two. If they persist or worsen, consult a pediatrician. ### **6. Consult a Pediatrician:** - **Medical Advice:** If the ulcers are severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms (such as fever or difficulty swallowing), seek medical advice. The pediatrician can assess whether there’s an underlying condition that needs treatment. ### **7. Offer Comfort and Distraction:** - **Comforting:** Provide comfort and distraction through activities she enjoys to reduce her focus on the discomfort. ### **Summary:** - **Avoid Irritants:** Offer bland, soft foods and avoid anything that may cause further irritation. - **Pain Relief:** Consult with your pediatrician for safe pain relief options. - **Oral Hygiene:** Maintain gentle oral hygiene practices. - **Monitor and Consult:** Watch for improvement and consult a pediatrician if needed. Taking these steps can help manage the pain from ulcers and support your child’s recovery.
