Taking BP medicine during pregnancy is common if you have gestational hypertension or chronic high blood pressure, and it's important for both your health and your baby's safety. After delivery, the need for BP medicine depends on whether your high blood pressure is temporary (gestational) or long-term.
If it’s gestational hypertension, your BP often returns to normal within a few days to weeks after delivery, and the medicine may be stopped gradually under your doctor’s supervision—usually within 6 weeks. But if you have chronic hypertension, you may need to continue medication even after delivery.
Your doctor will monitor your BP closely after birth and decide when or if you can stop the medicine. Never stop BP medicine on your own, especially during or right after pregnancy, as sudden changes can be risky.
