POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy9 months agoA. It can be distressing when your baby has a cold, blocked nose, and vomiting. These symptoms are often interconnected, as congestion can lead to difficulty breathing, irritability, and sometimes vomiting due to mucus buildup or coughing. Here’s how you can help your 11-month-old feel better:
1. Relieve Nasal Congestion
Saline Drops: Use baby-safe saline nasal drops to loosen mucus in the nose. After a few minutes, gently suction the mucus with a nasal aspirator or bulb syringe.
Humidifier: Place a cool-mist humidifier in the room to keep the air moist, which can ease breathing.
Steam Therapy: Sit with your baby in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes to help clear nasal passages.
2. Keep Your Baby Comfortable
Elevate Head: Slightly elevate your baby’s head while sleeping (use a towel under the mattress, not a pillow directly) to make breathing easier.
Hydration: Offer breast milk, formula, or water frequently to prevent dehydration.
3. Address Vomiting
Vomiting is often caused by swallowing mucus or coughing. After vomiting, wait 20-30 minutes before feeding again. Offer smaller, more frequent feeds to reduce discomfort.
4. Medications
Paracetamol/Ibuprofen: If your baby has a fever or is very uncomfortable, consult your pediatrician about giving appropriate medication. Avoid over-the-counter cold medications without a doctor’s guidance.
5. Monitor and Seek Medical Advice
If vomiting persists, your baby shows signs of dehydration (dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, lethargy), or if symptoms worsen (high fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing), consult your pediatrician immediately.
Most colds resolve within a week, but ensuring your baby is comfortable and hydrated will help them recover more quickly.
