A. If your child's skin is turning darker around the neck, elbows, or other folds, it could be due to dryness, friction, or a condition called acanthosis nigricans, which is sometimes linked to weight gain or insulin resistance. First, keep the areas clean and moisturized using a mild baby moisturizer or coconut oil. Avoid scrubbing the skin harshly. Apply a gentle cream with lactic acid or urea (only if prescribed by a doctor) to help soften thickened skin. If the darkening continues or spreads, consult a pediatrician or dermatologist to rule out any underlying condition.
