1. Saltwater Rinse: Mix a small amount of salt in warm water and have him rinse his mouth gently. This can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
2. Pain Relief Gel: You can use an over-the-counter topical gel like Dologel or Kenalog (if recommended by your pediatrician) to apply directly to the ulcer. These gels provide a coating that can numb the area and relieve pain.
3. Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress to the outside of his mouth or use ice cubes wrapped in a cloth to help reduce pain and swelling.
4. Avoid Irritating Foods: Avoid giving him spicy, salty, or acidic foods that might irritate the ulcer. Opt for softer, cooler foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or smoothies.
5. Pain Relieving Syrup: If the pain is severe, you can give him a mild children’s pain relief syrup (like paracetamol) to reduce discomfort, but make sure it's appropriate for his age and follow the dosage instructions carefully.
6. Hydration: Ensure he stays hydrated, as dehydration can sometimes worsen mouth ulcers.
If the ulcer doesn’t improve in a few days, or if the pain worsens, consult a pediatrician or dentist for further advice and to rule out any underlying conditions.
