POOJA KOTHARIExpecting Mom due in 1 month2 months agoA. It’s normal for a baby’s head to feel a little soft in certain areas during early infancy, especially in the fontanelles (soft spots), and for the shape to take time to round out and harden fully.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Soft Spots (Fontanelles) Anterior fontanelle (front soft spot): This is the larger soft spot on top of the baby’s head. It typically closes between 12 to 18 months of age. Posterior fontanelle (back soft spot): This smaller one usually closes by 6 to 8 weeks of age. 2. Head Shape A baby’s head may look uneven or slightly flat (flat head syndrome or positional plagiocephaly) due to lying on one side more often. The head usually becomes more round and firm by 6 to 12 months, especially as the baby: Starts sitting up Gains more head control Spends less time lying on the back 3. What You Can Do Give supervised tummy time daily to reduce pressure on the back of the head. Alternate the baby's head position during sleep. Hold the baby upright more often during the day. When to See a Doctor If the head shape looks very uneven or is not improving. If the soft spot appears sunken (sign of dehydration) or bulging when calm (could be a sign of pressure). If you notice delayed head control or other developmental concerns.
Would you like to tell me how old your baby is? That would help me guide you more specifically.
