A. Common Reasons for Spitting Up * Immature Digestive System: The muscle between the esophagus and stomach (lower esophageal sphincter) is still developing and relaxes too easily. * Overfeeding: Consuming more milk than the stomach can comfortably hold. * Swallowing Air: Taking in too much air during fast feeding, crying, or from an improper latch/nipple size. * Reflux (GERD): Mild, painless acid reflux is very common in healthy infants ("happy spitters"). How to Prevent and Minimize Spitting Up * Burp Frequently: Pause to burp your baby halfway through a feeding and again at the end. * Keep Them Upright: Hold your baby in an upright position for 20 to 30 minutes after feeding. * Feed Smaller Amounts: Offer smaller, more frequent meals if you suspect overfeeding. * Avoid Vigorous Play: Keep tummy time and active play for later, well after feeding. > Note: Consult your pediatrician immediately if your baby's spit-up is forceful (projectile), green/yellow in color, contains blood, or if your baby is not gaining weight normally.
