I am a mother to a 9 month old and a Paediatric dentist by profession. Milk teeth are of utmost importance to your child’s health. They serve as a matrix for the permanent dentition. There are several preventive measures that every parent should adopt in order to keep their children free from cavities and any kind of dental issues. Your child’s first dental visit should be at 6 months/ when you see the first tooth coming up in the oral cavity. Night time feeding should be weaned off anytime after you see the teeth coming. Try to wipe off your child’s teeth with a wet wipe or soft cotton cloth after each feed. Start using finger brush right from the time the first tooth comes up. Once your child is 2 years of age, you can put a ‘rice grain’ sized fluoridated toothpaste while brushing. Diet plays a pivotal role in maintaining a good oral health. Do not dip the teether or pacifiers in sugar syrup and give it to your child. Avoid giving chocolates or sugary drinks in bulk quantities.Dental caries/ cavities is a multifactorial disease. You have to be very careful in dealing with primary teeth. One must always keep in mind that the longer the tooth is in contact with sugar solution, the higher are the chances of decay. Lets all keep these key points in mind while we take care of our children because we all believe in the saying ‘ PREVENTION is better than cure’.
