As everyone probably knows, sanitary pads (napkins) have come into mass use not so long ago, around half century probably. In some parts women still don't get to use it.
So back then when sanitary pads were not there, if women went into temples, kitchen, etc, blood would've been spilled. And back then women used to do much more household work, make atta at home, stitch at home (make clothes), there were no diapers for babies, no washing machines. So instead of having to continue to do all this work when body is a bit weaker and in addition having to clean blood spilled, they were restricted, thus enabling them to rest.
As to the religious part of it, it probably was implemented so that everyone follows it, especially male part of society, for whom otherwise it would have been very difficult to explain that too in time when women didn't have half as many right as today.
But bottom line of it is that times have changed, now we have these sanitary napkins, washing machines, diapers, ready made clothes, a lot of food items like atta are ready made in shops, hence all the taboos don't apply now.
